The Polytechnic was established in 1854 and it granted its first degrees in Arts and Sciences in 1871, by special authority of the Regents of the State University. In 1890, it was reorganized and was given a broad college charter, which empowered it to confer, in its several courses of instruction, the degrees granted by other colleges of the State. This catalog gave detailed information of what each degree offered the curriculum according to the majors. </text>
