Mission and Activities

The Polytechnic Alumni Association (PAA) plays a crucial role in maintaining the connection between the alumni and Polytechnic Institute. Its mission is dedicated to promoting the interests of its members and the broader institutional community. This encompasses a variety of activities aimed at supporting alumni and enriching the Polytechnic environment:

Continuing Education: Providing ongoing educational opportunities for alumni.
Career Advancement: Offering resources and information to help alumni advance professionally.
Fundraising Efforts: Engaging members in fundraising activities to support the institute’s goals and projects.
Student Recruitment and Retention: Involving alumni in efforts to attract and retain students, which is vital for the institution's growth and diversity.
Promotion of Fellowship: Enhancing communication and fellowship among members and fostering strong ties between alumni and the institution.
Historical Overview

The PAA has a rich history that dates back to 1863 with the inception of the annual Alumni Banquet. Officially organized in 1872, it was initially exclusive to degree holders. Over the years, the association evolved and expanded its membership to include all graduates and former students who left in good standing. Major historical milestones include:

1872: Formation of the Polytechnic Alumni Association.
1890s: Merger with the Polytechnic Reunion, broadening the scope and functions.
1932: Official incorporation as the Brooklyn Polytechnic Alumni Association, Inc.
1960s: Transition to a non-dues paying organization in support of institute fundraising.
1996 and Beyond: Re-chartering as the School of Engineering Alumni Association and subsequent renaming to the Polytechnic Institute Alumni Association, reflecting its alignment with NYU.
The association now boasts over 33,000 members across 68 countries, illustrating its vast and diverse network.

Our Alma Mater

The alma mater song, penned by John R. Brierly in 1910, encapsulates the spirit and pride of the Polytechnic community. With lyrics that encourage alumni to "raise your voices in a joyous song," it serves as a rallying cry for celebration and remembrance of the time spent at the institute. The song is a cherished tradition that reinforces the values of striving and unity—echoing the historical and ongoing contributions of the alumni to their alma mater.

Meeting Dates and Further Involvement

The PAA holds regular meetings to discuss ongoing activities, plan new initiatives, and strengthen the alumni network. These gatherings are pivotal for steering the association’s goals and ensuring active participation from its members in various institutional developments.

Conclusion

The Polytechnic Alumni Association is more than just a community; it is a foundational part of the Polytechnic Institute that actively contributes to the school’s legacy of innovation and excellence. Through its committed activities and robust history, the PAA ensures that the bond between alumni and their alma mater remains strong and impactful.
