Reason behind the Restructure

The need for Urban Renewal and Development of the area around Polytechnic University has been expressed by the City for at least 20 years.

Polytechnic University, established in its current location in 1956, has long suffered from local conditions that have both made expansion and modernization (so essential to a technology-oriented institution) all but impossible and discouraged student enrollment.

The conditions listed below have also limited the expansion potential of Downtown Brooklyn

1. A street system that discourages the development of institutional buildings with large floor areas;
2. Underutilization of the area, vacant' lots and buildings, small buildings, marginal uses that depress activity:
3. Crime associated with such underutilization
4. Small irregular lot sizes and multiplicity of uses and ownership make substantial redevelopment extremely difficult
